Steelers Have Finally Uncovered The Missing Piece To Their Offense

The Pittsburgh Steelers had a true team win Sunday night against the New York Jets, coming out victorious with a final score of 37-15. Games like that have been rare for the Steelers in recent years. They're usually wrapped up in a close defensive battle or the opposing team would be too much for the Steelers. Sunday night showed a glimpse of what the new offense could be with Russell Wilson. The last time the Pittsburgh offense scored 37 points was Week 11 in 2021 against the Los Angeles Chargers.

On Monday, the Pat McAfee Show highlighted the importance of the decision Tomlin made to go with Wilson instead of Fields. It wasn't originally lauded by many, but no one can deny that Wilson was extremely productive, particularly in the second half.

Tomlin is well known for never having a losing record during his head coaching tenure in Pittsburgh. Although, some of those seasons came with 9-8 or 8-8 records or trips to the playoffs where the Steelers would lose in the first round. With no losing record, the Steelers also haven't had high draft picks to potentially get a franchise-altering player. This has left fans in Pittsburgh unsatisfied and hungry for a season where their team can actually make a run in the playoffs.

Tomlin has also found ways to get it done. He won four straight games in 2019 with Devlin Hodges in at quarterback, but ended up not making the playoffs that year. He's a great coach and players want to play for him, but has he not done enough or has he not had a complete team yet to actually compete with top contenders like the Kansas City Chiefs or the Buffalo Bills?

In the offseason, the Steelers brought in Wilson and Justin Fields. The organization also hired Arthur Smith as its offensive coordinator. The offense was getting a new identity and with an already solid defense, it was up to the offense to finally piece the team together. Fields started the season, leading the team to a 4-2 record, but there was still uncertainty. Fields' legs proved to be a threat on offense, but the passing game wasn't fully there for him.

Wilson opened up the playbook for Smith on Sunday Night Football and threw for 264 yards and scored 37 points, setting a franchise record for most yards thrown and points scored in a quarterback's debut.

Clearly, it's still early on and Wilson could end being a completely different quarterback for some games. Sunday night was a good test for him, though, against a solid Jets defense. There still needs to be a trade for a wide receiver to give Wilson another weapon, but the Steelers have looked the most complete they have in a while. Tomlin very well sees this and can coach them into winning big games.

Steelers Defense Giving Offense Great Scoring Opportunities

The Pittsburgh defense has been getting tougher each week and creating turnovers when needed. Beanie Bishop Jr. had a huge game for the Steelers, intercepting Aaron Rodgers twice. The offense answered those two turnovers with 14 points, something Steelers fans aren't used to seeing.

It was important for the Steelers' defense to have a big game because no one knew how Wilson would move the offense. The defense did let up 15 points in the first half, but they shut down the Jets in the second half. Pittsburgh's offense answered the defense's firmness with 31 unanswered points. If both sides of the ball continue to complement each other like this, the Steelers could make a run through the rest of the regular season and the playoffs.
