Steelers Head Coach Mike McCarthy Reveals Intentional Strategy Behind Selecting His Coaching Staff

The Pittsburgh Steelers hired former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy in late January to fill their hole at the position. The organization was forced to go in a different direction after their previous head coach, Mike Tomlin, abruptly stepped down after the conclusion of the 2025 season. Things should look very different in 2026, as McCarthy is an offensive-minded coach -- the exact opposite of what the franchise has done for decades. Pittsburgh has been known for its defensive-minded coaches in the past, and fans are excited about the change in mentality.

Along with McCarthy came a whole new coaching staff. The Steelers' coordinators and assistants on both sides of the ball left, or were let go, and McCarthy brought in his replacements. With that came Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham and Offensive Coordinator Brian Angelichio. Graham has plenty of experience as a DC and has held the position with other teams. Angelichio was a position coach and offensive passing game coordinator throughout his NFL tenure and now will have a chance at commanding the entire offense, even gaining praise from his former head coach, Kevin O'Connell

McCarthy's hiring was composed of coaches of varying ages and experience. According to Steelers writer Nick Farabaugh in a summary on X, this was intentional.

"Mike McCarthy says he views the coaching staff similarly to the locker room, where you need experienced veterans and mentors to develop young guys," Farabaugh wrote. "He says that’s what he aimed to get as he built his staff in Pittsburgh."

The point of emphasis is on the combination of both coaching archetypes. The Steelers' current roster emulates this too, with veterans like Cam Heyward and TJ Wattcombining with young players like Roman Wilson and future draft picks that will join the team soon. This decision will be a huge help in getting the most out of the team's players and improving development amongst young talent.

The fact that both sides of the ball got coaches that aligned with their experience is very interesting. Obviously, McCarthy was deliberate with this approach with his coordinators, but the same is true with some of his assistant hires too. Domata Peko is an example of mixing it up. Peko is a former AFC North rival of Pittsburgh's and is only a few years removed from being an NFL player. He brought tenacity and run-stuffing abilities as a player, and was hired to do the same in the Steel City as a teacher.

McCarthy's staff will look to build upon the existing skills of their players and continue to develop the stars and young players that are the cornerstones of the franchise. McCarthy will look to be the play-caller on offense, so a young mentor and analytical guy like Angelichio was the perfect hire. Graham's experience will bring continuity to a veteran, established defense. McCarthy, taking on assistants from various experiences and backgrounds, will add a nice mix to the staff and will provide players with voices from both ends of the spectrum.

Steelers' Youth Should Thrive Because Of This

The Steelers are gearing up for the 2026 NFL Draft in Pittsburgh this April. The front office has a dozen picks at its disposal and will look to add a solid batch of youth to the roster. McCarthy's hires will look to develop their youth to the best of their ability, with voices of different backgrounds. Draftees will hear from all sides of football.

An overhaul of draft picks will combine age and youth on the roster, and this coaching staff will have the same amalgamation. The future is bright in Pittsburgh, and under new direction, the team will look to remain competitive in 2026. It's a new age in the Steel City.
