The Pittsburgh Steelers decided to hire Mike McCarthy after Mike Tomlin chose to step away from coaching following the 2025 season. Now, the 2026 season marks a rare moment in Steelers history, as McCarthy becomes only the fourth head coach the franchise has had since 1969. He is tasked with turning over this roster and molding it into a team capable of true Super Bowl contention.

In 2025, Pittsburgh captured the AFC North title with a 10-7 record, but the team failed to win a playoff game. Led by Aaron Rodgers, the Steelers lost by 24 points in the Wild Card Round and has not won a playoff contest since the 2016 season. That lingering postseason frustration adds immense pressure on McCarthy from day one, as fans and analysts alike watch closely to see if he can finally break the Steelers’ playoff drought.

Steelers insider Brian Batko explained why the organization remains confident McCarthy has the secret formula to end the postseason struggles. According to Batko, it’s a combination of strategic adjustments, a proven track record of quickly turning teams around, and the ability to maximize the talent already on the roster. For Pittsburgh, hope comes with a mix of urgency and excitement as the 2026 season gets underway.

"By and large, his offenses in Dallas and Green Bay were very productive," Batko said in his Steelers chat for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette on Monday. "Combine that with a Steelers defense that has a bounce-back season and maybe you get a nice stew going..."

McCarthy has long been known for his ability to develop and mold quarterbacks over the course of his 18 seasons as a head coach, including 13 seasons with the Green Bay Packers and five with the Dallas Cowboys. Many believe in his ability to design and produce a talented offense. That’s not the issue. The real question lies in what led the Cowboys to part ways with McCarthy in the first place. After a strong start to his tenure in Dallas, the team’s disappointing finish raised doubts. Now, McCarthy is hungry to prove that he still has what it takes to win at the highest level.

Batko makes a good point. The Steelers’ offense has long been their Achilles heel since Ben Roethlisberger retired. The offense has often been a chore to watch. With Rodgers in the 2025 season, things were slightly better, but it still wasn’t among the league’s elite offenses. Many experts would claim the offense was more average than exceptional. With McCarthy now in Pittsburgh, many believe that could finally change.

Steelers' Defense Due For Bounce-Back Season

Combine that with a defensive core featuring TJ Watt, Cam Heyward, Jalen RamseyPatrick Queen, Alex Highsmith, Nick Herbig, Joey Porter Jr., and many other playmakers, along with a new staff eager to make their mark, and this team could truly be something special. However, much hinges on the quarterback situation. If Rodgers returns, he will be 43 during the 2026 season. It’s not ideal, but he won a Super Bowl under McCarthy in his prime. Perhaps the two can recreate that magic one last time.

Many were very high on the Steelers’ defense heading into the 2025 season. Former defensive coordinator, Teryl Austin, however, was widely criticized by experts and fans alike for underwhelming performance. Now, with Patrick Graham at the helm, excitement and hype around the defense are at an all-time high. While the unit didn’t fully live up to expectations in 2025, the 2026 season could be a different story. With Watt leading the charge, this defense looks poised for a bounce-back campaign.
