The Pittsburgh Steelers made it clear who their offensive coordinator was going to be on Wednesday. In fact, it was the new Steelers head coach, Mike McCarthy, who made this decision as he works on building out his staff. On Wednesday, it became official that the former Minnesota Vikings passing game coordinator and tight ends coach, Brian Angelichio, would be Pittsburgh’s offensive coordinator. Many Steelers fans have been curious about how this staff is getting filled out, and the hirings McCarthy makes will be telling for what type of direction this new era is going to take under his tutelage.

At 62 years old, McCarthy likely isn’t in Pittsburgh for a long rebuild and wants to maximize his offense immediately. His decisions regarding the coaching staff signal a desire to hit the ground running and implement an offensive identity that can produce results quickly. Angelichio, who has experience designing passing schemes and developing tight ends at a high level, fits into McCarthy’s vision of a balanced and dynamic attack. Steelers fans are eager to see how his offensive philosophy translates to the Steelers’ roster, as well as how it will impact the development of second-year quarterback, Will Howard.

As Steeler Nation starts to learn more about Angelichio, an interesting tidbit was revealed on 93.7 The Fan on Wednesday about the new offensive coordinator in the Steel City. While details are still emerging, it’s clear that McCarthy is putting his stamp on the organization and expects his staff to execute his vision immediately. For a team in transition, this hiring is an early indication of the style and strategy that will define Pittsburgh football in the coming seasons.

"Brian Angelichio is going to be the Steelers' next offensive coordinator. I had heard that he is the ultimate football guy from someone else not named Dorin [Dickerson]. I did not know it was to the degree where, all night he sleeps in the office. You hear that about guys, but his house did not have TVs and there was nothing in it," recalled host Chris Mueller.

Former NFL tight end Dorin Dickerson works for the show as a personality, and he also played under Angelichio during his time in college at Pitt

Angelichio was the offensive assistant and tight ends coach in 2006, and then from 2007 to 2010, he served strictly as the tight ends coach. The co-hosts on The Fan continued to share the information Dickerson provided, along with insights from other sources, about just how rare a football nerd Angelichio is.

"[His apartment] was just a dwelling where technically if he had to sleep somewhere, he slept there and then he would immediately just go back to the office to watch football. This one though, like Dorin's description of him which was very kind of evocative and funny almost made it seem like he is a football serial killer. You know what I mean? He has one overriding interest and the rest of it is just so tangential and tertiary, nothing else matters to him."

Steelers May Have Just Found Another Position Coach Guru

One thing the show brought up, which is practically eye-opening, is what happened back when Dickerson was in college playing under Angelichio. Dickerson was recruited as a running back and then moved to linebacker.

Former NFL tight end Dorin Dickerson stiff arms a Syracuse defender during a college game with the Pittsburgh Panthers during the 2007 season.

He was getting frustrated that they could not find him a position, but then Angelichio realized Dickerson could be a matchup problem at tight end and turned him into one very quickly. The fact that he took an athlete and turned him into an All-American in basically one year speaks volumes about his skill set, even if that was 5,500 days ago.
