The Pittsburgh Steelers have two young quarterbacks on their roster in Will Howard and Drew Allar. One of those individuals could end up being the future of the organization, but it will be hard for either to seal his fate in 2026 because of Aaron Rodgers' return to the locker room. If training camp and the preseason are the only leftover sessions for both players to prove themselves, the front office will be put in a tough position come 2027. The class coming out of the college ranks is expected to be stout, and it would likely be a mistake for Omar Khan not to select another signal-caller.

The big names remain unchanged for the 2027 NFL Draft. Arch Manning, Julian Sayin and Dante Moore will all likely hear their names called within the top 10 come April. Barring a catastrophic season for the Steelers, none of these guys will be in play unless an incredible trade-up is put together by Khan and co. This will leave fans and analysts immediately connecting other passers to Pittsburgh.
On the most recent episode of The McShay Show, Todd McShay, who is known for his expertise surrounding the NFL Draft and its prospects year after year, took a deep dive into the quarterbacks for 2027. He recently attended The Manning Passing Academy, which is hosted by one of the most famous families in football. When asked about who stood out the most, none of the aforementioned three topped the list. In fact, it was someone who could creep into the top 10 very easily.
"CJ Carr, Notre Dame, wasn't even close. Wasn't even close," McShay said. "Julian Sayin was there and Arch Manning was there and there were a lot of other guys that were exceptional, and I say that, [Carr's] performance throwing the football, like, that's the jumping-off point."
In all fairness to Moore, he was not in attendance, but the analysis still stands. CJ Carr could very well be in trade-up territory for the Steelers if Pittsburgh is picking in its normal spot in the low 20s. However, a rise up the board this early means that other teams will certainly be paying attention, if they weren't already. McShay even compared Carr to a pair of absolute legends.
"When you think about like [Tom] Brady and [Drew] Brees and you think about, like, the modern day โ even like [Fernando] Mendoza last year talking about repetitive, repeatable former mechanics; it's like, I don't want to say robotic because he's not a robotic player, but when it comes to footwork, timing, ball out, just standing there, watching him even like warming up."
The analyst was in awe watching Carr put on a show. He's not some no-name prospect, as he is listed in several mock drafts as being a potential first-rounder, but lighting it up with Manning and Sayin in attendance as well speaks volumes.

The Steelers will have a tough choice to make in April of 2027. It might not become so difficult if either Howard or Allar emerges, but it's going to be hard to stay away from a class that seems to be so talented.
Pittsburgh expects to be competitive, which means picking inside the top 5 or so is unacceptable. The organization has also not had one of its own selections in the first 10 picks since 2000. Someone like Carr catapulting forward will only make things more difficult for Khan if neither Howard nor Allar seems to have what it takes.

Pittsburgh may not know its draft positioning now for 2027, but it is aware that a quarterback might need to be taken once again. A home run prospect would be impossible to ignore; however, it is hard to tell if anyone will be within reach. Moving way up the board to take someone like Carr in the 12-15 range might once have been possible, but now it's already looking like it will be extremely difficult.
