The Pittsburgh Steelers fan base has been begging the coaching staff to get a little more creative with superstar edge rusher TJ Watt. It's no secret that Watt has become one of the most feared defensive players the NFL has ever seen, but coming off injuries, getting older, and following a down season, it seems like the general NFL world hasn't been as high on Watt lately. That's natural when an edge rusher reaches the other side of 30, but it's important to remember that Watt isn't just any player. He suffered an unfortunate punctured lung during the 2025 season and didn't quite perform at the level many expected him to.

Part of that is because Watt has set the bar incredibly high for himself. Others believe opposing offenses have been able to predict where Watt will line up and take him out of games because he constantly aligns on the same side. That gives offenses an advantage, allowing them to run away from him and make life a little easier on themselves. That's been one of the biggest criticisms of the defense under former defensive coordinator Teryl Austin and ex-head coach Mike Tomlin.
Now, with new Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham in town and Mike McCarthy taking a less hands-on approach with the defense, many are hopeful Watt will remind the NFL world just how dominant he can be as a pass rusher. Watt is 31 years old, but he could find new life under this coaching staff.
When Watt spoke with Steelers insider Chris Adamski on Wednesday, he made some eye-opening comments that should give fans optimism heading into the 2026 season. Specifically, Watt hinted that he could begin lining up in different spots across the defense. Throughout his career, Watt has lined up almost exclusively on the left side, but that could be changing under Graham's new scheme.
"A lot of us are interchangeable partners," Watt said on Wednesday. "You're not just learning your position. You kind of have to learn the whole defensive front structure because we all are basically interchangeable."
If that ends up becoming a regular part of Pittsburgh's defensive approach, it could be one of the most significant changes the unit has made in years. Modern NFL defenses are constantly searching for ways to create favorable matchups, and moving Watt around would force opposing offenses to spend more time identifying where he is before every snap.

For years, offensive coordinators have been able to build protection plans knowing exactly where Watt would line up. While that hasn't stopped him from piling up sacks and earning multiple All-Pro selections, it has allowed offenses to devote extra attention to his side of the formation. A more versatile deployment could make those plans far more difficult to execute just like other teams do with their star pass rushers.
Steelers' Entire Pass Rush Would Reap Rewards
The move would also benefit the rest of Pittsburgh's pass rush. If offenses are forced to shift protection toward Watt regardless of where he lines up, it will create more one-on-one opportunities for the Steelers' other defenders, such as Alex Highsmith and Nick Herbig. That's exactly the type of ripple effect elite players can have when coaches are willing to be creative.

Of course, none of this guarantees Watt will suddenly return to his peak statistical production. The NFL is too competitive for any adjustment to be that simple. However, putting one of the league's premier defensive talents in positions that maximize his strengths seems like a logical step for a coaching staff looking to put its own stamp on the defense. Steelers fans have been calling for this type of change for years. Based on Watt's recent comments, there are now legitimate signs that Pittsburgh may finally be ready to embrace it under Graham's tutelage.
