The Pittsburgh Steelers ended up watching as their 2025 team MVP walked in free agency. Kenneth Gainwell signed in the 2025 offseason for just $1.79 million, but quickly shocked the Steelers and the entire NFL with tremendous play all season long. What seemed like a depth pickup turned into arguably the Steelers’ best offensive player during the 2025 campaign. Now Pittsburgh moves forward with Jaylen Warren and new running back Rico Dowdle. The Steelers also have Kaleb Johnson, who is entering his second season and looking to take a step forward after his rookie year.

With Ramon Chinyoung Sr. leading the way coaching the running backs, the hope is that Mike McCarthy can once again have a back he’s familiar with, similar to what he had in 2024 with the Dallas Cowboys when Dowdle rushed for over 1,000 yards. Pairing him with a physical, hard-hitting back like Warren could be enough to significantly improve the rushing attack. Add in a young offensive line that is developing together, and there is real potential for this unit to take a leap.
Before joining the Steelers via free agency, Dowdle rushed for 1,076 yards and six touchdowns with the Carolina Panthers. He is now looking to make it three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons in the Steel City. While speaking to Chris Adamski after Organized Team Activities on Thursday, Dowdle revealed how eager he is to get this new duo with Warren started.
"Yeah, I think that is well said, like you said, the thunder and lightning," Dowdle said. "You got two guys who have been productive in this league. It is always good to have two guys that can go out here and get the job done at a high level. Plus, now other defenses got to look out for us now."
Warren rushed the football 211 times for 958 yards and scored six touchdowns in 2025. He also added 40 receptions for 333 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns. Now, adding Dowdle’s production along with the history of success he and McCarthy had together in 2024 creates a lot of optimism about how strong this rushing attack can be. It is no secret that the Pittsburgh way is running the football.

The Steelers have long been known for their ground game, and that is largely why they made the choice to draft Najee Harris in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft. Unfortunately, that pick never quite materialized into what Pittsburgh had hoped, but now heading into 2026, it appears the running back room could be a real strength, especially if Johnson continues to develop and can become a complementary piece.
Steelers' Biggest Factor In Determining RB Success For 2026
One of the biggest factors in determining how far this unit can go will be how the carries are distributed and how each back is utilized situationally. Warren brings explosiveness and toughness between the tackles, while Dowdle offers a more traditional downhill style that can help stabilize early-down situations.

Johnson, meanwhile, gives the Steelers a younger option with upside if he can carve out a consistent role. The offensive line’s growth will also be critical, especially in short-yardage and red zone situations where games are often decided. If Chinyoung's group finds rhythm early, the Steelers could lean heavily on the run game to control tempo and set up the passing attack.
