Steelers Veterans Receive The Uncomfortable Truth About Mike Tomlin Era Habits

The Pittsburgh Steelers have undergone some massive changes this offseason. After long-time head coach Mike Tomlin stepped down, the team consequently hired veteran coach Mike McCarthy. McCarthy is navigating his first offseason in the Steel City in his own way. The team's way of doing things has been completely changed, and the difference is already noticeable. Throughout organized team activities (OTAs), Steelers pundits have been taken aback by the differences between the new and old regimes. McCarthy hasn't been afraid to work his players with intensity, even in the early parts of preseason activities.

There's no question that McCarthy is looking to make a splash in his first year at the helm in Pittsburgh. The Steelers brass has been vocal about how they want the team to be competitive in 2026. Now, the team must take a roster that is loaded with veteran talent and scheme it in a way that will make them the most successful. The previous coaching staff's defense became predictable, and it was exposed harshly last season. The offense lacked explosiveness and rhythm.

The Steelers had a way of doing things year in and year out during Tomlin's tenure. Players who have been a part of the team for many years were getting used to how things were scheduled, expectations, and the general way that OTAs, minicamps, and training camp would go. On the Steelers Collective podcast, insiders Mark Kaboly, Ray Fittipaldo, and Noah Strackbein discussed how McCarthy's way of doing things can wake up the veterans.

"Maybe TJ Watt and Cam Heyward and a bunch of other guys got too comfortable, right? I mean, maybe it just got to be a little bit stale. Maybe they have to be challenged in different ways. I don't hate it in that regard," Fittipaldo said. "I'm sure it did get stale. They might never admit it, right? But come on. You do the same thing for 15 years, 18 years, or whatever. Cam Heyward's been around, what has it been now? 16 years? It gets stale," Kaboly responded.

This challenge to the veterans can be a positive thing. Making them a little uncomfortable or making them acclimate to a new system is good. Pittsburgh needs all it can get from its vets, and under this new staff, things can turn around for guys like Watt and Heyward. Watt, especially, after he had a down year for his standards.

The new coaching staff can light a fire under the bellies of the veteran players on this team. These guys have fallen into habits under the old staff, and this can create a sense of urgency. They'll have to learn a new playbook and scheme, potentially being used in ways they weren't previously. The language, messaging, and expectations will be different which will force them to learn and study as they had earlier in their careers.

This can push franchise cornerstones like Watt and Heyward to the next level as they get older. A new coaching staff will replace complacency and bring out the best in them. McCarthy has already been challenging his team. With new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham leading the way, he'll incorporate a much-needed revamp to a defense that has become stale over the past few years.

The Steelers Really Needed This Culture Shock

After many years of the same coaching staff, when things consistently go wrong, it's probably time for a change. While the decision was made for the Steelers, it can have a huge impact. Pittsburgh's high standards haven't been met over the last few seasons.

Yes, they haven't had a non-losing season in decades, but it has been nearly 10 years without a playoff win. Under McCarthy, the team should be reinvigorated. This will only help young and old players find a spark and set up for success.
