In the 2025 offseason, the Pittsburgh Steelers made a bold move by sending a second-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks in exchange for wide receiver DK Metcalf. After just one year of Metcalf, it's been disappointing. The offense struggled to get him the ball, which isn't entirely his fault, as he was the team's only respectable receiving threat who wasn't a tight end or running back. He wasn't able to get open when doubled, leaving him completely neutralized from some games. The scheme he played was also predictable, making things even more difficult. Now, going into 2026, things look much brighter for the $30 million man.

To help out Metcalf, Omar Khan went out and acquired wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. from the Indianapolis Colts. Pittman is a proven threat in the NFL and should be a tremendous help to take the load off of Metcalf.
The team also used a second-round pick on Alabama product Germie Bernard, who can play anywhere on the field. With a skillset that resembles Deebo Samuel, Bernard can line up inside, outside, and even as a running back. If he gets the ball in his hands, magic can happen. With these new weapons, teams will no longer be able to zero in on Metcalf, making him much more of a threat this season.

Recently, an unexpected former player spoke about Metcalf and his redemption season. Antonio Brown went on TikTok live and told Steeler Nation that the former Seahawk will be much better in 2026, coming back hungry after his disappointing start in Pittsburgh. Brown has been unhinged on TikTok lately, but decided to make some positive remarks on Metcalf.
"I think DK Metcalf will come back this year motivated, hungry, you know what I'm saying? I think it will be dope," Brown said.
Late in 2025, Metcalf had an altercation with a Detroit Lions fan, which led to his suspension for the final two games of the regular season. A situation that easily could have cost the team a playoff berth. Now he looks to make amends in 2026 and give Pittsburgh a return on its investment. He will have his quarterback from last year, Aaron Rodgers, but he will also play under a new scheme that should be very beneficial to him.

Now that Mike McCarthy is the head coach, the offense will be taken seriously. That is already showing with the revamped wide receiver room. Now that Metcalf will be able to play in a more modern NFL scheme, he may finally be able to blossom as a Steeler. There are mouths to feed in Pittsburgh, but with Metcalf's contract size, he is the priority to get the ball in his hands. Hopefully, he can get back to his old ways from his days in Seattle, only this time in the Black and Gold.
Steelers' Metcalf Needs To Bounce Back
When the Steelers gave Metcalf a monster fiveyear, $150 million contract, it made him one of the highest-paid pass catchers in the NFL. Instantly placing high expectations on him, and in his first season in the Steel City, he did not meet said expectations. Racking up just 850 yards and six touchdowns, regardless of his situation around him, they need more from him.
Metcalf will have all the help he needs to flourish as the top option; it will be up to him to make the plays. The McCarthy system is very good for number one wide receivers.
The former Ole Miss product should see the majority of targets through the air, allowing more opportunity to make the splash plays that he's typically known for. If Metcalf isn't able to bounce back this upcoming season, some tough conversations may have to take place. A cap hit of that size needs to produce big numbers, let's hope that it doesn't get to that point.
