The Pittsburgh Steelers' defense was nothing short of underwhelming in 2025. A unit that has some of the NFL's premier talent found itself struggling, especially as the season went on. The opposition was able to create explosive plays and run at will at times against the defense. Many blame the scheming for limiting Pittsburgh's stars, as they were too heavily relied on. Oftentimes, the post-snap looks were overly complicated for the defense, but easily recognizable for veteran quarterbacks. With the team's new coaching staff and defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, the hope is to flip the script and get back to the dominant defense that fans are used to.

The Steelers' defense is one of the reasons the team has been so successful in its storied history. The Steel Curtain of the 70s, up until the dominant units of the mid-2000s, the Black and Gold's success has been through its defense. Over the last few seasons, Pittsburgh has had some great defenses and some great talent, but in 2025, it came up short. While it will be difficult to recreate the Steel Curtain in 2026, Graham has the opportunity to fix the miscues that prevented the 2025 defense from being great.
In his media availability on Tuesday morning, Graham recognized the defense's need for improvement. The goal is clear for Graham, and that's to get this defense back to where it should be. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Christopher Carter transcribed the press conference on X.
"There's no need for any gimmicks from me as a coordinator. I don't need to make up any BS about that. The people around the town make it clear. They make it clear wherever you go to eat ... we're trying to earn our place in this tradition," Graham said.
The expectation for the defense is clear. The group was the highest paid in 2025, and in 2026, is projected to be at the top of that list again. The standard is the standard, as previous head coach Mike Tomlin often said. Well, Graham expects his defense to be one of the league's best, and the fans do too. The city of Pittsburgh already has high standards for defense, and with the existing talent, there's no excuse for a repeat of the previous season.

As mentioned before, many blame the scheme as the reason for the defensive struggles of 2025. Graham's scheme has already received some positive affirmations from his players, which is a good sign, as there were some frustrations with the last one. Graham has said he'll keep the traditional Steelers 3-4 look. Graham has used a variety of different looks in each of his stops in the NFL. But his defenses often rely on the versatility of his players. His defenses have not had the best rosters, overall, but the Steelers' abundance of talent will help tremendously. There are possibilities that the team's star edge rushers will be moved around to create mismatches, something he did with the Las Vegas Raiders.

Another thing he does is simulate pressures and use linebackers and safeties in blitzes. Pittsburgh is known for its pass rush, but getting it in non-traditional ways is a part of Graham's strategy. The Steelers have a ton of dependable talent that should be able to dominate in this defense. A new scheme was necessary; now, the hope is that it can help the unit break out.
The Steelers' Defense Has All The Tools To Be Successful
The previous coaching staff made it difficult for last year's defense to succeed. But under Graham, there's no excuse. An expensive, star-studded veteran defense will hope that this boost will help them reach their potential. Graham has changed nuances to his scheme in each stop to fit the roster he's coaching. This time, he'll have three star edge rushers, a secondary that has seen upgrades over the offseason, and a linebacker corps that has a high ceiling.
