Steelers' Mike McCarthy Gets Huge Endorsement From Exciting 2026 NFL Draft Prospect

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ new head coach, Mike McCarthy, comes to the Steel City hoping to end the franchise's playoff win drought. To do that, he will need to have a great 2026 NFL Draft, and it is going to take place in their backyard. The draft is being hosted in Pittsburgh for the first time in NFL history, and it is a very exciting time for the organization and the city.

Cincinnati linebacker Jake Golday is hoping to hear his name called in the 2026 NFL Draft. He is an exciting prospect, as he is not at the very top of the big board of linebackers, but in the Steelers On The Clock rankings, he is listed as the fifth-best at the position. The 6'4", 240-pound linebacker is expected to go somewhere between the late first and early third round, with many pundits labeling him a Day 2 prospect.

On Monday, it became public that Golday delivered a message to McCarthy during his interview at the 2026 Scouting Combine. Golday let McCarthy know that he grew up a massive fan of him during his Green Bay Packers days. Golday shared the story while speaking on Up & Adams on Monday.

"It was my first meeting of the day, so I didn't really know what to expect," Golday said while speaking with Kay Adams. "I knew it was Mike McCarthy and he was standing outside of the door, and I knew I needed a little ice-breaker to get more comfortable in the situation... I told him I was a huge fan of him and I grew up loving the Packers, and that he had a lot of really great teams there... It went really, really well. I am super excited to see what comes from that."

That moment quickly caught attention, not just because of the connection, but because it showed the kind of respect young players still have for McCarthy’s resume. For a prospect like Golday, who is trying to separate himself in a crowded linebacker class, moments like that can stick with coaches and front offices longer than people realize.

Golday’s game backs up the buzz as well. At 6'4" and 240 pounds as mentioned, he brings a rare blend of size and athleticism that teams covet at the position. He moves well in space, can drop into coverage, and has shown flashes as a downhill run defender. While he may not be as polished as some of the top linebackers in the class, his upside is what has scouts intrigued.

For the Steelers, linebacker remains a position where adding youth and depth could go a long way. With McCarthy now leading the charge, there is a clear emphasis on building a roster that can compete right away while also developing talent for the future. Golday fits that mold as a player who might not be a finished product but could grow into a major contributor with the right coaching.

Steelers Have A Ton Of Picks In The 2026 NFL Draft

The Steelers have a ton of picks in the range where Golday is expected to go. Maybe if he falls a little bit, the Steelers would be inclined to draft him, even though linebacker isn’t at the very top of the list of positional needs for Omar Khan and McCarthy.

The fact that the draft is being held in Pittsburgh only adds another layer to the story. Prospects like Golday will be looking to make their dream come true on one of the biggest stages possible, in front of a fanbase that is as passionate as any in the league. If the Steelers do end up targeting him, it would be a full-circle moment that started with a simple message at the Combine.
