The Pittsburgh Steelers have been trying to get better at stopping the run over the last few seasons. Many pundits would argue that the Steelers have certainly improved in that area. In the 2025 season, the Steelers’ defensive line, led by the timeless 36-year-old defensive captain Cam Heyward, made significant strides. The front seven limited explosive plays better than they had in several seasons, showing a marked improvement in consistency and discipline.

The defense allowed 113.1 rushing yards per game, a notable drop from the 127.4 yards per game allowed in 2024, and the Steelers also did a commendable job of limiting rushing touchdowns. The additions of Derrick Harmon and Yahya Black further bolstered the unit’s mobility and ability to penetrate gaps, giving opposing offenses fewer options and more pressure in the backfield. The progress of the defensive front has been steady, but the Steelers may now have a chance to take a major leap forward. The Steelers also improved already in the 2026 offseason by signing Sebastian Joseph-Day.
On Friday evening, NFL insider Adam Schefter provided an update that could reshape the Steelers’ defensive outlook for 2026. According to Schefter, controversial free agent Christian Wilkins intends to play in the 2026 season. Wilkins is widely regarded as an elite run stopper, and if he joins the Steelers, he would pair exceptionally well with the existing front seven, adding both power and technique to an already improved unit.
"Free-agent DT Christian Wilkins fully intends to play this season, but he is still rehabbing his foot injury," Schefter said. "So far, 26 teams have reached out and are waiting for Wilkins to be ready, and he is expected to have a new home as soon as he wants."
Of course, questions remain. Wilkins’ history of injuries and his exit from the Las Vegas Raiders complicate the picture, leaving uncertainty about his health and long-term availability. In the report, it was made clear that Wilkins is still recovering from his injury. He's likely to be much more affordable than his previous big contract, but his injury history, chemistry issues, and age would certainly be a concern as he is now 30.

That said, the upside of adding a proven run stopper could outweigh the risks if the Steelers are looking to immediately improve their front seven. He still has the physical tools to dominate gaps and disrupt opposing backfields, which is exactly what Pittsburgh has been trying to build around.
Even with some rust from his rehab, Wilkins’ presence alone could change how offenses game-plan against the Steelers. There’s also the possibility that a one-year deal gives both sides flexibility, letting him prove he can still play at a high level without a long-term commitment.
Steelers Could Become Elite If They Pulled This Move Off
Chemistry concerns could be mitigated by pairing him with veteran leaders like Heyward, who can help him integrate into the locker room and scheme. Ultimately, if Wilkins stays healthy, he could be the missing piece to turn Pittsburgh’s run defense from good to elite. Even so, the potential of adding a player of his caliber could be a rare opportunity for the Steelers. Fans are already speculating about how Wilkins would fit into the rotation and how his presence could elevate the defense to a top-tier run-stopping unit in the league.

If the move comes together, it would feel like the Steelers have been handed a gift on a silver platter. It would be a real chance to solidify one of the most important aspects of the game and make a statement in 2026. For a team that has been steadily improving against the run, adding Wilkins could be the final piece to take them from good to dominant.
