The Pittsburgh Steelers are often credited with being one of the most successful franchises, not just in NFL history, but in professional sports history. Since 2003, the team has not finished under .500. Former head coach Mike Tomlin did not finish under that mark at all during his tenure in Pittsburgh. Now, the Steelers have a new head coach and are heading into a new era. This record is at risk of being broken, and could cause fans to feel an unfamiliar feeling: the team they love not being competitive.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin looks shocked as he speaks with the media after a loss in the 2025 season.
The Steelers have hired a brand new coach in Pittsburgh's own, Mike McCarthy. Tomlin manned the ship with defensive prowess for 19 seasons and joined a long lineage of defensive-minded Steelers head coaches. The team often relied on their stout defense to win games. Tomlin won a Super Bowl with Pittsburgh and is considered to be a future Hall of Fame candidate. His Steelers were well-coached and disciplined, and his unique relationship with players motivated them to be their best. All of these attributes led to almost two decades of a winning culture under his guidance.
Now that Tomlin has stepped down, ESPN analyst Dan Graziano wrote that he thinks that the Steelers' winning ways might come to an end in 2026.
"Playing 22 straight seasons without a losing record is a stunning accomplishment and a testament to the culture and stability that has defined the Steelers over that time," Graziano wrote. "But the reason this isn't an overreaction? It has kind of been on a knife-edge for a while now, and it's possible Tomlin was holding it all together. The Steelers have had a really limited ceiling for a decade now, and at some point, the floor is going to drop out."
Was the reason the Steelers never had a losing season during Tomlin's tenure all because of him? Not necessarily. However, Tomlin's coaching style and focus on defense are definitely some of the reasons that Pittsburgh hasn't needed a full rebuild in many years. Now, the Steelers will have a coach who is offensive-minded and is known for developing quarterbacks.
The Steelers will now go in a different direction with how their team is coached. They'll focus on scoring points and have a defense that keeps the ball in front of them and can rush the quarterback. This culture shock may be a surprise for fans who will see their team play a little differently.

Steelers Head Coach Mike McCarthy looks out toward the media during his opening press conference on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, which was held at Acrisure Stadium.
Thankfully for hardcore fans, it has been said that the Steelers will keep their patented 3-4 defense, even with McCarthy's hire. He is from Greenfield, right outside of Pittsburgh, and grew up watching a dominant Steel Curtain defense. Surely, the Steelers will remain a physical team. However, this change could bring hiccups. The Steelers have yet to decide on a starting quarterback. The defense is getting older and might take a step back.
Steelers Fans Need To Be Patient
McCarthy is bringing a whole new coaching style to a team that has consistently hired coaches who prefer defense. Under Tomlin, he did not call the plays on offense. He was known for his defensive work, and entrusted his offensive coordinator to handle that duty. In McCarthy's case, the opposite is true. The Steelers announced the hiring of Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham to the coaching staff. Graham will take play-calling duty on defense, something completely different from the previous regime.

Additionally, McCarthy's offense is pass-heavy, which could be an issue when the Steelers haven't gotten word from their 2025 starter, Aaron Rodgers, on if he wants to come back. The Steelers are known for smash-mouth football, and running the ball with success and they may have to stick to that plan if they want team success. This team is completely different from previous years, and if it doesn't have immediate success, fans should remain calm. The organization will help McCarthy and his staff succeed and, over time, build a team for him to lead to success.
