Pittsburgh Steelers General Manager Omar Khan has made it obvious that he is aware that being dominant in the trenches is how you excel in the NFL. The Steelers have tried several moves to try and improve their offensive line, and over the course of a few seasons they have done just that. They now have an exciting young group that is growing together. The bad news for this new group, led by new offensive line coach James Campen, is that Isaac Seumalo walked away from the team, leaving in free agency. He was the veteran leader in that room, and now the Steelers need to find a replacement for him, but they also need a veteran presence in that room again.

Well, the latest happenings with the San Francisco 49ers, after a report from NFL insider Ian Rapoport, give Khan and new head coach Mike McCarthy a really exciting chance to not just replace Seumalo’s veteran presence on that line, but potentially get a superstar veteran, albeit at the age of 37 years old.
The #49ers are now said to be open to trading Pro Bowl LT Trent Williams, sources say, if the situation doesn’t get resolved.

That opportunity could come in the form of veteran left tackle Trent Williams, the longtime star of the 49ers offensive line. If the reports about the 49ers potentially reshaping their roster are accurate, the Steelers should be among the first teams making a call. Even at 37 years old, Williams remains one of the most dominant offensive linemen in football.
His power, technique, and leadership could instantly elevate a young Steelers offensive line that is still learning how to win together. During an episode of the Pro Football Focus podcast, Dalton Wasserman connected Williams to the Steelers.
"You're talking about a player who would improve any offense he goes to," Wasserman said while speaking on the show. "Pittsburgh would make sense to me. He'd be a major upgrade there. I think there's so many spots. Still, even at his age, one of the elite players in football. Still a top-5 tackle in all of football... I think you're talking about a guy you move mountains for, right? I mean, he's still one of the best players in football."
For Khan and McCarthy, adding a player like Williams would solve several problems at once. However, not without a big cost. He's due $32 million in salary with a $38 million+ cap number in 2026.

Though, the Steelers could move mountains for Williams and it would make sense. It would replace the experience lost when Seumalo departed in free agency. Second, it would give Campen a true tone-setter in the meeting room. Young linemen develop faster when they have an elite veteran showing them the standard every single day. There's not much better than Williams.
Steelers' Offense Could Stabilize With Veteran
Williams has built a reputation throughout the league as exactly that type of presence. On the field, the impact could be even bigger. Pittsburgh has invested heavily in young linemen through the draft, and the flashes have been encouraging. However, young offensive lines often struggle with consistency. A future Hall of Fame caliber tackle protecting the edge would stabilize everything and ease the concern caused by Broderick Jones' injury.

It would help the running game, improve pass protection, and allow the rest of the line to play with more confidence. Just as important, Williams would buy time for the Steelers’ young blockers to continue developing without being forced into leadership roles too early.
