Steelers' Former HC Mike Tomlin's Secret Retirement Plans Get Revealed

The Pittsburgh Steelers were shocked when they learned that then-head coach Mike Tomlin made his decision to retire at the end of the 2025 season. Once that happened, many assumed that he would either be an analyst or a commentator on some national television station, as he seemed to be a great fit for that industry. He repeatedly stole the hearts of many fans with his press conferences, speeches, and behind-the-scenes looks from 2024's in-season Hard Knocks series. It all seemed to just make perfect sense.

However, all those rumors went right down the drain. While hosting the morning show on 93.7 The Fan, Bob Pompeani revealed what Tomlin had specifically told him multiple times about what he wants to do in retirement.

"I think [Mike Tomlin] would be excellent [on TV], but I know he's not going to do it," Pompeani said. "He's told me over and over and over that he has no intention and, in his words, disappear, and that's pretty much what's happened so far."

While most people thought that Tomlin would be great for TV, he apparently has no interest in doing it. There were reports that companies would get into a bidding war just to secure his services, but he seemingly doesn't want to go that route. Instead, he just wants peace and quiet with his family. He's secured generational wealth from how long he has coached for, so that shouldn't be an issue for him at this point.

Tomlin has made a conscious effort to stay out of the public eye since his retirement. He has not yet made a statement on why he retired, and the media last heard him talk in his postgame press conference after the Wild Card loss to the Houston Texans, where he refused to give any sort of clue that he had coached his last game in Pittsburgh. The most notable time he has been seen since then was at events for the Georgia Bulldogs to help support his daughter.

Tomlin has definitely done a great job of staying out of the media since his final press conference, and that is how he wants it to be. However, there are so many questions that everyone has that he has left unanswered. Reports and supposed private conversations have come out, but there are still things that need to be heard from him. The first question is when he will re-appear to answer everything?

Judging by his reluctance to make himself public since January, he likely won't answer everyone's questions for a while, if at all. It will most likely be much later than people hope, although there is no sort of timeframe on this. There likely will not be an announcement on it either. He will reveal everything whenever he's comfortable doing so, and it may be on someone's podcast with no warning whatsoever.

Steelers May Not Get Massive Trade Compensation After All

The theory that many fans had was that Tomlin would spend a year on TV, then he would go back and coach elsewhere. If he wants nothing to do with the NFL world at this point, odds are he also does not want to come back to coaching. He is already a lock to make it to the Hall of Fame, so there is no sense in going back in and hurting his reputation more, especially since a team would have to give up a lot of draft capital to get his rights from Pittsburgh.
