The Pittsburgh Steelers are heading into the NFL free agency period looking to fix a large amount of holes at key positions throughout the team. Most of them are on the offensive side of the ball, and there are plenty of names out there that the Steelers have been monitoring thus far. With the new league year opening on March 11th, the franchise will want to have their plans solidified by then, so they can bring in the players that they need to, especially if they end up losing key players from last season to other teams.

The Steelers have already faced a significant amount of change during the offseason. This may end up proving to be a great way to incentivize the team to become more aggressive in free agency, leading to potential moves being agreed to before March 11th, when these moves can become official.
On the latest episode of the Kaboly + Mack show, hosts Mark Kaboly and Chris Mack discussed when they believe the Steelers might make their first move, and who that move might be. In their discussions, Kaboly brings up an interesting point about which position the Steelers might target with the most priority in free agency, and gives hints that the first move might be coming fairly soon.
"Honestly, I think they're turning over every leaf, every stone, whatever cliche you wanna use to be able to find that receiver, and look what happened last year," Kaboly said. "Metcalf was right about now? Couple days before? So, this is the time they're gonna go. I wouldn't be shocked if we hear something over the weekend. Absolutely not."
It's a great sign that the franchise is looking to fix the situation at wide receiver with haste. There are plenty of quality free agents at the wide receiver position, and others that could be traded, and the Steelers might end up making a move to add one of these pieces to the offense. The Black and Gold struggled mightily on the offensive side of the ball at times in 2025, and could end up potentially losing one of their biggest contributors from last season in free agency (Kenneth Gainwell). If they end up making a move over the weekend, then the transaction will likely boost morale significantly.

New Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy is introduced at his introductory press conference.
Now that the Steelers have hired new head coach Mike McCarthy and completely overhauled the coaching staff, they'll want to continue to retain the winning culture previously established. This desire to continue winning is a big motivator for why the Steelers could be making aggressive moves soon, and these moves would certainly be a welcome change.
As Kaboly also mentioned, this is right around the time when the Steelers made their aggressive push to fix the offense last offseason. They traded for wide receiver DK Metcalf on March 13th of the 2025 NFL offseason, and if a move is announced over the weekend, it will be, potentially, only a day or two off from the one year mark of the Metcalf deal.
The trade for Metcalf went a long way to help give the offense a new identity, and with all the change impacting the organization and their desire to continue winning, it would seem likely that Kaboly's remarks will be proven right and that the team will make a key addition to the roster fairly soon.
Steelers Making Moves Sooner Shows Willingness To Build Around Quarterback
If the Steelers are able to make a move over the weekend, as Kaboly suggests, it shows to any free agent quarterbacks in the NFL that the Steelers are committed to doing everything they can to build around them. No matter which quarterback ends up starting for the franchise in 2026, if they end up making moves now, and aggressive moves on top of that, they stand a greater chance to sign a talented quarterback.
