The Pittsburgh Steelers selected wide receiver Calvin Austin III in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and from the moment he arrived, former head coach Mike Tomlin was intrigued by what he brought to the roster. Tomlin loved Austin’s speed, versatility, and edge, believing he played with a noticeable chip on his shoulder after being underrated because of his size at 5-foot-9 and 160 pounds. Unfortunately, Austin’s rookie season never got off the ground, as an injury forced him to miss the entire 2022 campaign, delaying his chance to prove himself at the NFL level.

In 2023, Austin quietly began to show why the Steelers were so high on him, flashing playmaking ability whenever he was healthy and given opportunities. His speed stretched defenses, and his toughness stood out despite his frame, making it clear he could be a valuable piece in Pittsburgh’s offense. That progress carried into the 2024 season, where Austin became a trusted member of the receiving corps and special teams, even if the unit itself was considered relatively weak compared to others around the league.

By 2025, Austin’s skill set had earned the admiration of quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who became a big fan of his quickness and versatility. However, despite that praise, Austin now finds himself entering free agency with an uncertain future in Pittsburgh.

Steelers insider Mark Kaboly does not expect General Manager Omar Khan or new head coach Mike McCarthy to prioritize bringing Austin back, signaling that his time with the franchise may be coming to an end.

"Calvin Austin III (WR): Of course, anything can happen between now and March 11, but I’d be shocked if Austin doesn’t sign elsewhere," Kaboly said in his Steelers 2026 free agency predictions. "Now, don’t get that confused with what the Steelers should do, and that’s sign him. What they will do is out of their hands, and Austin will find a better fit somewhere else. -- CHOOSES TO SIGN ELSEWHERE."

Kaboly wanted to make it clear that while he does not expect Pittsburgh’s brass to bring Austin back, he personally believes the Steelers should re-sign him. During the 2025 season, Austin recorded 31 catches for 372 yards and three touchdowns while appearing in 14 games, missing time due to injury. Despite the setbacks, he remained productive when available and continued to show value within the offense.

Over his four NFL seasons, all spent in Pittsburgh, Austin has totaled 84 receptions for 1,100 yards and eight touchdowns. His speed and versatility have also made him a valuable asset as a return man, adding another layer to his overall impact.

Austin has earned $3,778,160 across his four seasons in the league, and his projected market value, according to Spotrac, sits at roughly $4.9 million annually. His value is currently projected at two years, $9,747,710.

2026 Steelers Free Agent WR May Get Paid More Because Of Aaron Rodgers

Whether he ultimately reaches that number remains to be seen, but Austin has proven himself to be a reliable and trusted weapon throughout his career. Rodgers spoke highly of him, and that endorsement could help Austin secure an even stronger deal on the open market.

Rodgers’ pending decision will likely factor into the situation as well. If Rodgers returns and plays for Pittsburgh in 2026, he could push for Austin to be brought back.

However, based on what Kaboly knows, he believes the new regime will not be as eager to retain Austin and that the wide receiver may find a better fit elsewhere. Steeler Nation would be disappointed to see Austin leave the Steel City, but fans will be rooting for him regardless. He has become a trusted fan favorite during a stretch when the Steelers’ offense was often difficult to watch.
