All eyes are on the Pittsburgh Steelers as new Head Coach Mike McCarthy works to build his staff. As only the fourth Steelers head coach since 1969, McCarthy is tasked with turning things around in Pittsburgh. He won’t have much patience from the fan base, which hasn’t seen playoff success since the 2016 season.

Building a strong staff is essential. Former Head Coach Mike Tomlin was criticized throughout his tenure, in part for not hiring the right offensive or defensive coordinators. Former Defensive Coordinator Teryl Austin wasn’t very popular, and neither have the last few Steelers offensive coordinators in the post-Ben Roethlisberger era.
That’s why it’s so critical that McCarthy gets his hires right. The offensive coordinator position is one of the next roles that may be announced soon, according to Steelers insider Mark Kaboly and his sources.
"SOURCE: Minnesota Vikings passing game coordinator/tight ends coach Brian Angelichio is close to agreeing on a deal that would make him the offensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers," Kaboly said. "It could be official as early as Wednesday."
If finalized, Brian Angelichio would step into a crucial role for McCarthy as he looks to modernize the Steelers’ offense. Known for his work developing tight ends and coordinating the passing game in Minnesota, Angelichio brings experience that could help Pittsburgh’s offense adapt in the post-Roethlisberger era.

Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how his hiring shapes the team’s strategy moving forward. One key area to watch is obviously the quarterback position. A second year QB in Will Howard will be very impacted by this potential hire. It's clear that Pittsburgh's new regime, including McCarthy are very high on Howard's potential. Getting the right coordinator in place is prudent for his development.
If Kaboly’s report proves accurate, this would be considered a relatively strong hire for the Steelers. Naming an offensive coordinator has been one of the most pressing priorities for McCarthy, who needed to get both key coordinator positions right to set the tone for his tenure in Pittsburgh.
He already made a bold move on the defensive side by hiring Patrick Graham as defensive coordinator, a decision that many now view as a sneaky smart hire given Graham’s reputation for creative scheming and adaptability.
Bringing in Angelichio would solve, or at least simplify, another major piece of the puzzle. The offensive coordinator role is crucial in determining how McCarthy’s vision for the team translates on the field, especially as the Steelers continue to transition from the Roethlisberger era. Angelichio interviewed for the position on Tuesday, and the fact that news of his potential hiring leaked the same afternoon suggests he made a strong impression.
Angelichio brings 14 seasons of NFL coaching experience, including a three-year stint under McCarthy in Green Bay from 2016 to 2018. His background developing tight ends and coordinating the passing game aligns well with the Steelers’ current needs, particularly as they look to modernize and diversify their offensive approach.
Steelers Appear To Be Heading In Positive Direction
Fans who have been waiting for decisive moves from McCarthy are likely to view Angelichio’s potential hiring as a positive sign that the team is heading in the right direction.
With both coordinator spots potentially filled by coaches McCarthy trusts, Pittsburgh’s roster and playbook could become easier to evaluate and more predictable in terms of the strategic direction.

While the 2026 season is still far off, establishing stability in these critical roles early gives the Steelers a chance to build momentum, set expectations, and instill a clear identity on both sides of the ball.
