The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a busy and eventful offseason, highlighted by major acquisitions and notable departures. With the conclusion of the 2025 NFL Draft, the team has added promising young talent to its roster. However, much of the media spotlight has been focused on the potential signing of veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, one of the game's all-time greats. Despite the buzz, no official word has come from Rodgers or the Steelers organization, leaving many to wonder when, or if, a decision will be made.

The uncertainty surrounding Rodgers' decision has sparked widespread speculation and discussions. Many people expected him to make an announcement before the 2025 NFL Draft, but no update has been provided so far. Recently, Steelers insider Mark Kaboly shared his thoughts on the matter in a post on X, offering insight into when Rodgers might finally break his silence.
"I say May 22, but definitely before OTAs [Organized Team Activities] start on May 27," Kaboly shared.
Reports have shown that the Steelers have extended an offer to Rodgers and are now awaiting his response. For Steelers fans, the wait has felt endless, leading some to question Rodgers' level of interest in joining the team. While it seems the decision comes down to either signing with the Steelers or retiring, with someone like Rodgers, it's impossible to predict his next move with certainty.
Kaboly, along with others, appears confident that Rodgers will ultimately choose to sign with the Steelers. While public opinion on Rodgers is divided, largely due to his off-field persona—his on-field accomplishments are undeniable. He has built a remarkable NFL career, earning four league MVP Awards, a Super Bowl MVP, and a Super Bowl championship. Rodgers is also a 10-time Pro Bowler and holds several NFL records, including the highest career passer rating.
Despite Rodgers' extensive experience, there are valid concerns surrounding his potential signing. At 41, he is the oldest active player in the NFL, a notable factor in such a physically demanding sport where youth and agility offer a clear advantage. These concerns were heightened when Rodgers suffered a significant Achilles injury during the opening drive of the 2023 season, cutting short his much-anticipated debut with the New York Jets. The injury sidelined him for the remainder of the year, raising doubt on his durability moving forward.

It’s important to recognize that major injuries like Rodgers’ require a lengthy recovery process, often extending beyond just being cleared to play. Last season, he was still in the midst of his recovery, with this upcoming season likely offering a better opportunity for him to return to full form. Despite the challenges, Rodgers managed to post respectable numbers, throwing for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns during a difficult 5-12 season for the Jets. If he chooses to return, it will be interesting to see whether he’s driven by a renewed sense of purpose and a desire to embark on a revenge tour.
Fueling the fire of a potential revenge tour, the Steelers’ upcoming schedule could be especially enticing for Rodgers if he decides to sign. Pittsburgh is set to face the NFC North—Rodgers’ former division, which means a highly anticipated matchup against Rodgers' first team, the Packers, along with showdowns against longtime rivals like the Detroit Lions, Minnesota Vikings, and the Packers' biggest rival, the Chicago Bears. Adding even more drama, the Steelers are also scheduled to play the Jets, Rodgers’ most recent team, in which he doesn't seem to like very much. While the schedule has not been released it, information regarding the opponents has been released.
The Steelers Still Have Options Even If Rodgers Doesn't Sign
The Steelers aren't without options if Rodgers ultimately decides not to sign. While there's still no official word from him, it's important to consider the team's alternatives. In the 2025 NFL Draft, the Steelers selected quarterback Will Howard from Ohio State University in the sixth round. However, it's unlikely that Howard will be a starting option this season, with the goal that Howard has time to develop. In this scenario, Mason Rudolph would likely take over as the starting quarterback. While not the most high-profile option, Rudolph brings valuable experience both at the NFL level and within the Steelers organization. He has also shown the ability to lead the team to key victories in the past as well.
